These two young ladies look quite similar; perhaps they are sisters, reading a letter from a family member. The lady in pink is quite smartly dressed, with her white trimmed hat, whilst the other, holding a large jug seems to be in the midst of chores. There is another jug behind her and a large basket of vegetables. It is possible that she cannot read and her companion is reading to her. In 1870, illiteracy rates in England for women were at 25%, this dropped considerably as education improved and by 1900 stood at 3% for both men and women.
