An old woman, a fish seller or 'jouster' carrying a heavy load of mackerel in a basket or caul across her back with a strap across her head, steadfastly trudges up a hill in Newlyn. The angle we view her from seems to emphasise the drudgery of her toil. It was hard, dirty and smelly work. Her tattered clothes further illustrate her humble situation in life. She would be heading inland to sell fish that she had bought from the boat. A lugger is moored up behind her. The lady in this painting was probably Grace Warren, a Newlyn woman who featured in several of Langley's works.
