Billy Renfree was a distinctive figure, a Newlyn fish 'jouster' or hawker who sold fish from the back of a cart pulled by his donkey 'Dear Beauty'. He was something of a local celebrity and featured on photographic postcards from the early 1900s as well as posing for some of the Newlyn artists.
Henry Maynell Rheam painted him several times.
