Probably in the 1940s, in the corner of Newlyn Harbour along the Strand, motorised pilchard drivers, engine powered boats which had been converted from traditional luggers, bring in their catch in baskets. Shippam’s had a small fish-canning plant at this spot. These later luggers now have wheelhouses and possibly two or three engines. The masts have the same configuration as the old boats and although the mizzen sail is set, the main mast was as likely used for lights or a hoist as it was for an auxiliary sail.
