Children at play on a beach was a popular subject for Harvey. In this work, the foreground figures sit around a fire, beyond, two girls in white pinafores play at the water’s edge. The two boys watch the fire intently; perhaps they plan to cook some shellfish. It is a happy scene, capturing a sense childhood wonder, and a warm seaside summer.
