This work has a similar feel to Harvey’s Tulip Pickers. A glorious view of Mounts Bay with an azure blue sea frame a bucolic scene of men amidst a field of lush green brassicas. Towards the end of the 1920s, a thriving market gardening industry developed in Cornwall, growing spring crops such as carrots, cabbages and onions. We can see that the man in the foreground is using a sickle to harvest the cabbages, both men are stooped and although it is a glorious day, this must have been very demanding work under a hot sun.
