In this oil we see a reasonably affluent home with a young man playing the violin. His sheet music is propped upon a pile of books; above which is a corner cupboard filled with attractive blue and white china. We can see the stock of a gun hanging above the fireplace. He borrows light from the window behind him.
Music was an important part of the social life of the day. There was a whirl of informal musical soirées as well as amateur performances in the public rooms.
The sailors garb worn by this musician was a fashion led by Royal princes, but it may suggest he was the son of a seafaring family.
